This Week at TravelGolf.com (April 2-8)

By Douglas Carey,
Contributor

What a week in the world of sports, starting with Monday's NCAA men's basketball championship game. Add the opening week of the Major League Baseball season and the NBA playoff drive, and there's plenty to watch. For golfers, however, there's nowhere else to be Tuesday night except in front of the television with the remote set on ESPN. When Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer tee off in a rare head-to-head match for Shell's Wonderful World of Golf, you won't want to miss a single swing. (The made for television affair airs Tuesday (April 3) at 8 p.m. EST on ESPN.) Staff writer Derek Duncan was at the event when it took place in March, and he said it's a day he won't soon forget.

"I'd never seen either Arnold Palmer or Jack Nicklaus play before. To me, I wasn't going to miss it," Duncan writes. "It would be like if my grandfather said that he passed up an opportunity to see Babe Ruth in his last game-I'd never understand how. This kind of thing doesn't come around too often." The duel was held at the World Golf Village's The King & The Bear, a new course co-designed by the two competitors and the first collaboration in their prolific architectural careers.

OldDominionGolf.com:
Grave Satisfaction Found in Virginia

As senior writer Jeffrey A. Rendall writes, there are numerous golf courses in Virginia that play on a Civil War theme. No surprise there. But only a few tracks can authentically claim to rest on actual battlefield earth. Fairfax National Golf Club is one of those. Three nines, all named after famous Civil War battles, make up Fairfax National. The courses are very flat for a Northern Virginia course, and only the holes along the property boundaries would have traditional out-of-bounds. All things considered, our reviewer had an enjoyable afternoon. "The nature of the course and the property's history wouldn't allow me anything less than a good time," Rendall writes. " There may be some courses around that'll excite you more, but there aren't any where you'll have more fun."

GolfArizona.com: Setting Sonoran Standards

When Troon North opened 10 years ago, many golfers gasped at the $80 per round price tag. Now a round here will cost you $225, and tee times are hard to come by. But as senior writer David R. Holland writes, "Troon North is worth it. Even the annoyance of noisy carpenters, toting boom boxes and spreading out over the Sonoran Desert landscape like a cloud of gnats, shouldn't deter any avid golfer from worshipping at the Troon North altar at least once." Located in the heart of Scottsdale, Troon North features the Monument Course and the Pinnacle Course. Rest assured, both will provide ample challenges. While you're there, Holland recommends a stay at the Four Seasons Resort Scottsdale, featuring a view of Pinnacle Peak, perfectly framed from your luxury casita's patio door.

MyrtlebeachGolf.com: The Tradition Continues

arizona golf arizona golf arizona golf Golf Digest hit The Tradition with its four-star rating in its "Places to Play" ratings, and right from the get-go it's not difficult to see how the course fell into favor with the magazine's reviewers. Nestled in the quaint little settlement of Litchfield Beach, the Tradition was recently given top honors by the Golf Course Owners Association of South Carolina. As senior writer Shane Sharp writes, there's a reason for all of the attention. The Bermuda grass greens, superior drainage, and easily maintainable conditions at the Tradition make it one of the most playable tracks in Myrtle Beach year around. And be sure to catch Sharp's sidebar on the man who helps bring it all together, head professional Robert Spangler.

When we sent senior writer Kiel Christianson to cover the Michigan Golf Show for us, we thought he'd return with tales of overpriced concession food and cheesy golf promotions. We weren't disappointed. Fortunately, he also returned with a new product report that includes Tee Up Rite, a USGA-conforming plastic tee with rings and a little locking disk that allows you to set each tee so it will go into the ground only so far. And for rainy or humid days, Dry Hands is a remarkable, non-tacky, non-sticky water repellant for your hands. Christianson also checked out the Power Glove, a golf glove with a loop on the wrist. The loop works like a sixth finger to keep you from regripping at the top of the swing. It also keeps you from opening or closing the clubface on the backswing. For complete information on these products and more, check out Christianson's full report.

StAndrewsGolf.com: Always a Surprise in Scotland

In playing Scotland's Ballater Golf Course, you will not have to battle with waist high rough nor howling easterlies; the holes are not too exacting nor is the length prohibitive. As staff writer Andy Bain points out, the whole essence of this course appears to be geared towards helping the golfer to enjoy the challenge of playing golf, from shotmaking to course management. "The course condition, especially the greens, is superb and with the fantastic scenery and surrounding environment, it is easy to see why this course is a popular destination for people on golfing holidays and the seasoned golfer alike," Bain writes.

From the Rough

In case you missed last week's report, be sure to catch GolfFlorida.com staff writer Derek Duncan's three-part series on the spellbinding World Golf Village, which begins with a review of The King and the Bear, the first collaborative effort between Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus. "As one might expect, The King & The Bear is a course that exudes great class and polish," Duncan writes. "World Golf Village is a beautiful and well-conceived operation, a superlative ode to golf, and its two courses are grand, beautiful products."

Opened in 1998, The Slammer & The Squire is the first of three planned golf courses at World Golf Village. Designed by Bobby Weed, the course is a tribute to Hall of Fame members and golf legends "Slammin" Sam Snead and the late Gene "The Squire" Sarazin, who both consulted on the layout. Duncan says the course is a "playable, dynamic and impeccably manicured course, deserving of recognition amongst the state's most noteworthy layouts." In the final part of the series, be sure to check out an overview of the World Golf Village, Hall of Fame, and other attractions. The brainchild of the PGA Tour, the World Golf Village houses numerous memorial and historical sites and organizations under one proverbial roof. Our reviewer says it's well worth a visit.

As always, if you disagree with our reviewers on a certain course or just want to sound off about the latest from the PGA Tour, be sure to visit the TravelGolf.com forum, a series of message boards where visitors can write about everything from the Myrtle Beach golf scene to new equipment. There's also a free classifieds section where golfers can advertise that old set of clubs they've been meaning to sell for years. And if you haven't checked it out already, be sure to visit the new TravelGolf.com Pro Shop, a joint venture with The Golf Warehouse. With all of this at TravelGolf.com, there's no need to go anywhere else on the Web.

Until next week….happy golfing!
